Are certifications important to being a Virtual Assistant and if so how do you choose which certification to apply for?  Well, I think both questions need to be addressed by each as an individual.  There are different certifications with different criteria and different pricing.   No     one can say one is better then the other, but each individual has to find which certification and criteria best fits their own needs.  Listed below are the certifications currently available:
     AssistU
    Executive Solutions (ES)

Not listed below but available to members of the Canadian Virtual Assistant Connection (CVAC ) is the Certified Canadian Virtual Assistant

Certifications can show prospective clients you have proven abilities and have taken the time and effort to gain evidence by passing certification criteria.  Listed below are the certifications and some information to help you inform you on what each provides, for more information on the certifications and their background please visit the individual websites.

Overview of our philosophy on our training and certification:

In order to be considered for the Virtual Training Program at AssistU, one must possess skills and have experiences at such a high level that he or she would already be able to earn certification from any of the other certifying bodies.

From that place, one moves through our comprehensive synchronous and asynchronous training program -- much like a graduate school for professional Virtual Assistants -- learning more, growing, and building a foundation for a solid business and great life.

After successful completion of all program elements, and earning an 80 or higher on a difficult knowledge-based final exam, one becomes a graduate of our program.

Those who are dedicated to their professional success and growth go on to work toward our certifications, which are the highest certifications available to a professional Virtual Assistant. Certification benefits them because it calls them to work to their highest and best level. Certification benefits their clients because it lets the clients know that the VAs are deeply engaged and invested in professionalism and growth, and is likely to be more expert partners for the clients' successes.

Our certifications are open only to our graduates. They are:

Certified Professional Virtual Assistant (CPVA)

Certified Master Virtual Assistant (CMVA)

Overview of the CPVA exam:
Awarded to those AssistU graduates who can show proficiency in more than 50 core competencies and meet certain experiential and technology requirements. The exam is skills-based, and done as a client simulation. Over the course of eight weeks, the VA "works" in the simulation with a client (in actuality one of the AssistU trainers) doing real work, partnering, collaborating, and providing evidence of competency. Everything is watched, and judged for levels of proficiency. It's time and energy intensive. People spend an average of 150 hours over the eight-week period working in this simulation.

Overview of the CMVA exam:
The CMVA is awarded to those AssistU graduates who have already shown proficiency in over 50 core competencies by earning their CPVA certification, and who can also prove that they've grown professionally to a Master's level. There are currently only five CMVAs in the world.

To apply for the CMVA, one must meet rigorous standards, including:

Evidence of formal training
Evidence of competency
Evidence of experience
Evidence of standards and ethics
Evidence of being in business
Evidence of advanced technology and proficiency with that technology

The CMVA designation is earned through requesting an application package, and by submitting all materials specified. Upon receipt, an oral exam date is set with the Certification Review Board, comprised of three AssistU CMVAs. At the interview, the applicant will be asked to defend information included in the submitted application package; much like a Ph.D. defends a thesis. After the interview, the Board will make final determination on the applicant's certification.

Additional information is available on our certification page. Complete information is made available to our students and graduates as it only pertains to them.

Criteria & Info:

VACertification.com is an experienced based certification program.  As we determined what the best procedure for certification was we considered a testing program VS an experienced based program.  We felt that a testing program would not be as credible as an experienced based program. We decided this for several reasons.

1)  We could not provide adequate oversight of the tested individual i.e., we could not provide nationwide or worldwide proctors for the examination.
Therefore any certification based on the individual taking a test which they were on the honor system would have little value.

2)  Experience is the keystone to success.  Many individuals could actually pass a test but have very little experience to assist a small business man because they just  have not been around long enough and have not been
involved in many things.  Nothing against the individuals but an example would be that someone has received a BA but has not been out in the world putting what they learned to practical use.  They will make many mistakes where someone with a High School education that has been a secretary or
executive assistant for 20 years will not make the same mistakes.  They have been there and learned through experience.

We have developed a point system providing points for each level of
education, points for each year of experience etc.  Through this point system we evaluate what experience the individual has and award points for the individual.  If they reach 300 points they are awarded a Professional Virtual Assistant (PVA) certification.  If they are awarded 400 points they are awarded a Master Virtual Assistant (MVA) certification.

We also contact their business references by phone or email.  Depends on the individual. We talk to them and receive a recommendation for the individual in the same manner that a potential employer would for hiring a new secretary. A simple reference check.

We look at their website, letter head, and business card and make sure they
are presenting a professional appearance.

If all checks out they are awarded a certification.

Criteria & Info:

Member of ACS, minimum 5 years secretarial/ administrative experience, must be participating in continuing professional development (education), have knowledge of minimum 3 software packages - 1 at intermediate level, belong to at least another professional association or group (shows commitment to their role and what they do), or provide training to others in the industry or to a client base, and/or be participating in a professional reading program. Resume and references to also be supplied, as well as listing of education sessions attended and any certificates received. Referees are only contacted if anything needs to be clarified/verified. Reason being is that a relationship between the application and ACS is already developed - more knowledge of the applicant, i.e history of their abilities has been established in most cases. 100 point process.

The reason for this was to demonstrate that ASO recipients have kept up their skills to current day levels - there are many out there who have been working for 20 years plus in some industry (even Diplomas can be many, many years old) but do not even have knowledge of many MS products (due to specialised software in some industries being used) and/or might not even understand how to download files via email or the web. So current experience is a key criteria to achieve ASO.

Synopsis:
Executive Solutions (ES) does not restrict anyone from applying to become certified.  But...Be prepared to demonstrate your skills and knowledge in the administrative field to obtain an ES Certification.  Be confident that your skills are top notch before applying.

Our examination process is thorough, challenging, and will provide ES a good assessment tool for your skills and level of expertise.  If you pass our evaluation process you have what it take to represent the VA Industry.  Therefore, two levels of Certification (professional and master) is not needed or offered.  Executive Solutions BCVA designation endorses your Mastery of all requirements and professional credentials to meet the high standards of professional excellence needed in the VA Industry.

Requirements:

Pass or fail, knowledge-based exam required.  Your formal education and experience history are calculated within our merit system.  Any documented training, certification, individual classes, VA Training, seminars, continuing education, QUEST, independent study programs, distant learning, and professional development classes that can be directly applied or enhances knowledge pertinent to the administrative industry may be submitted for consideration.

Executive Solutions developed a merit system that takes into account competencies, which include personal characteristics, motives, self-concept, knowledge, education, and behavioral skill. The more complex the job or professions requirements, such as a VA Certification, the more important are the competencies.

In addition, your work history, VA practice, life-long learning experiences, and "relative administrative" experience holds a heavy merited rate.  It is our philosophy that all education and all experience in the administrative field are of great importance in determining competencies for certification of skills and knowledge.

To Apply:

The BCVA designation is earned by requesting an application package.  The applicant will be required to submit their portfolio as outlined in our website.  Complete details of the ES Certification process is available at our website.  Please visit www.es4u.com/va_certification.htm to learn more.
