Effectively Presenting an Idea                     Virginia Reeves

Below you will find a brief overview on how to best promote your proposal. These tips will help set the stage for your persuasive skills to be better showcased.

1. Select the appropriate time and place to present your idea.
* if the listener is rushed or easily interrupted, they can't give you their full attention
* invite only those who need to be there
* gather all the information needed to sell your idea and organize it well in advance of the meeting
* set up the equipment prior to the meeting time to demonstrate your preparedness

2. Describe the background of the idea
* people often plunge in without explaining the why and how of current conditions
* don't assume the listeners are going to know pertinent details
* if appropriate, hand out information at this point in the meeting or use another visual aid

3. Positively and objectively present your recommendations
* prove you've done your homework
* state recommendations clearly and concisely
* make your presentation believable and realistic
* bring up possible objections as this makes your words more credible
* show some amount of enthusiasm to demonstrate your sincerity

4. Determine if understanding has been met and handle reactions
* get feedback; be sure the listeners really comprehend the proposal
* answer questions and reply calmly to concerns or misunderstandings
* clarify your basic proposal (and solutions if that is the case) by reiterating it in another manner

5. After agreement, confirm the next steps
* who will take the necessary actions and how will that authority be acknowledged
* where and with whom does responsibility for implementation and follow-through lie
* what is the timeline and who makes ensures proper action is taken
* how and when will the results be evaluated

These techniques will help you achieve a good atmosphere for effectively presenting your proposal. Good luck the next time you find yourself in the position of persuading others to adopt your ideas.
